Baroque

Welcome to Baroque. This is the St.Peters Church which is built in the Baroque style. The Baroque was in fact the response to the Protestant Reformation, which I was not aware of. The Catholic church used the Baroque style as a form of propaganda almost. When entering a church that is from the Baroque period, at first it might seem overwhelming due to the amount of gold and silver. There are angel and saints' statues everywhere. After entering such a church as St.Peters and taking in the first shock, it becomes visible that this visually loud style is saying something. It is through these statues and paintings of saints that the Catholic church is telling the viewer a story. That is why the Baroque was a response to the Protestant Reformation. While the Protestants wanted a demystified religion, the Catholics could not agree. This style was intended for the illiterate. This way they could better understand the religion without having to read the Bible.
In the case of the Catholic church, the Baroque was also used as a display of power over the Protestants. The Baroque was a display of power and wealth. Of course not only churches were built in the Baroque style. Thus, the Habsburgs of Austria, among other European monarchs used the Baroque to display their power and wealth to visitors. Because of its strong visual message, the Baroque is shocking, but its is beautiful. Both Adri and I were impressed at what we discovered and we do plan on going back. We also found out that we missed reliquary shrines.

The German word of the day is: verbinden
It means to connect.
For example: Ich muß  meinen Computer verbinden.
